suffering from a mild cold, I think, pace was slow, missed 3 attacking 15m too soon and unable to see flag tucked at the foot of a big boulder, also missed 4 right, stopped early on 7, and then took a poor route on 15, failing to appreciate the steepness of the valley and should've gone right to the pond and contoured, outside of the rocky valleys the navigation was pretty easy

haven't adjusted GPS on 2 because this is the direction of the path on the ground, lost time on 5 in the rough stuff (better to go around or ...?), the map was wrong at 11, where a path junction was in fact a junction with a gully/earth bank (as it was represented on an earlier version of the map)

Fast re-location exercise in a group of three. We did course in reverse. I had the map on 9, 6 and 3; messed up on 8, thought we had stopped 100m earlier, ran past control (tape) and had to admit defeat and go north to re-loacate. The other 'noodles' are waiting around and/or watching the action.

test run/control hanging, missed 5 high among the MTB knolls but could see it from where I stopped, couldn't make sense of map at 9, GPS trace suggests I visited the corrected place but I don't think so, the slope seemed steeper and longer than it should've been, vegetation at 18 was much nicer than suggested

The other half of the Oceania area, only visited by the elites (briefly) in the World Cup race. Ground covered with debris. Tough going until the second half of leg 3, tough but runnable through to the approach to 11, in which I got cramp and had to stop and stretch; horrible again to 14, but fast(ish) thereafter. No misses.

worst run in a long while, running too fast in unfamiliar terrain (although pace was correct for the distance), couldn't make sense of the map, streams should've been narrow erosion gullies, but weren't represented as such because of legibility, decent compass and distance work would've got me through

1:2000 and 2m contours, everything was coming up too fast, buildings seemed far too close, challenging to think quickly enough, was out of control on 'long' leg to 2

most of the 'runnable' here was light green at best, dense trees and debris, missed the v short 4, lots unmarked gullies in the vicinity after 7 headed along the path to have a look at the green area (it was white two years ago!)

test running long course, checking tapes, handled the exercise pretty well, lost concentration to 9 when I started to think about the exercise, missed path junction, re-located but didn't see tape, area around 17 was very vague and couldn't see tape so spent time searching (changed leg for actual exercise)

messy, had to attack to have any chance of taking first place, rough route to 2 but had minute man in sight at 3, which led to lack of concentration and some confusion on route to 4, also 5

tired, really hard to get going, but did, eventually; blew the race, and the series, at 13, where I intended to aim off to the left but went straight and found unmarked boulder (in fact, obscured by number), hard to relocate

good run, fast pine forest, allowed myself to be influenced/distracted by fellow competitor (Seb) on 8 and 10 (flag was tucked out of sight at 10 and I misread narrow 'spur' as re-entrant), 14 was bingo, but I got away with that one

very wet, torrential rain overnight, many paths were flowing streams, missed path junction at 9 and rough open had scattered trees (often white in Oz), then found unmarked cairn

another good sprint run, didn't spot the shortest route on 1, tried to turn too early on 10, overtaken by elites and juniors on the downhill stretch (Shamus Morrisson, Soren Bobach)

very warm day, caught by Bill Edwards at 2, 'elastic' broke on long leg to 8, missed in circle, very tired, stopped to drink before punching 10, walked last part of hill at 11,

only miss was coming around the back of 20, but must have been slow through the terrain: lost a lot of time on 2 with only a minor hesitation, also on 3 and 7, and very cautious on the long leg through the green

very hot day (pm), good run, but brain almost melted approaching the spectator/drinks control, control 7 was on an unpleasant rocky slope, could've been straighter on 1, 5, and should've contoured to 8, started to run to 16 from 14

first ever run in the Australian bush, very warm day, not a bad performance, but wasn't anywhere near aggressive enough, in particular, didn't identify the collecting feature (gully) at 7 until I arrived at it

pretty tight run: hard out of the start, mitigating the longer route choice, not running fast enough through 2, 3, 4, hesitant about route to 7, very hot day
